The Challenge

In high-volume electronics recycling, hidden risks are everywhere.

Devices often arrive with embedded lithium-ion batteries, and other hazardous materials like toner cartridges and pressurized tanks frequently slip through manual sorting.

For PedalPoint (formerly evTerra), the challenge was clear: how to catch these threats before shredding—without slowing down a fast-moving operation.

The Solution

Visia Field Engineering team worked closely with PedalPoint's operations team to design a bespoke material enforcement workflow for PedalPoint's complex e-scrap streams that integrates seamlessly with existing line operations. Visia's AI-powered X-ray system continuously scans incoming material, identifying unwanted, hazardous items like Li-ion batteries through dense material in seconds.

Laser guidance pinpoints flagged items for removal, while advanced models classify battery chemistries to inform precise downstream processing and comply with strict handling protocols.

National Rollout

After proving its value at a single site, Visia's platform was quickly expanded across all facilities nationwide.

Now, every location benefits from standardized safety protocols, real-time data, and consistent throughput gains.

Impact at a Glance

  • 10–30 hazardous items removed per load
  • Prevented thermal events with upstream detection
  • Reduced QC staff by 67% while improving throughput
  • Chemistry-specific battery detection enabled
  • Full Visia rollout across national operations
